Saturday Family Workshop

Create unique pictures without a camera using the basic photographic materials of light, chemistry and photo-sensitive paper. Creative experimentation is encouraged. Each of the four workshops will be offered on consecutive weeks each month beginning in February. You may attend 1, 2, 3 or all four related sessions in a month or pick your favorites and repeat them to further your exploration of the media. Class size is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Drawing & Painting –– Using pens, brushes and other artist tools imagine doing an ink drawing or watercolor but, instead of ink and paint you will apply controlled solutions on photographic paper. Your art will come to life slowly before your eyes-- like a Polaroid print. This technique has unlimited possibilities to create pictures that have unique, artistic effects.

Chemigrams –– See what develops when you create imaginative designs on photographic paper. Drawing, painting and rubber stamp techniques using a resist applied to developing photographic paper have endless possibilities for creative exploration. This is an especially fun technique with often surprising results.

Photograms –– Create unusual pictures of found objects without a camera. Using basic black & white darkroom techniques, various every-day objects are arranged on photographic paper and then exposed light. When developed, the results are exciting abstract designs, mostly unpredictable and each one unique.

Negative Prints –– Digital cameras have quickly replaced film as our method for image-making where, previously, a negative was needed to make a picture. You will create your own 'negatives' on clear acetate using a variety of materials as diverse as your imagination. You will then print these negatives in a traditional darkroom to make photographs of your creations. Using this process, multiple copies can be made from a single negative.

Saturdays: 11am - 1pm
Fees: $20. for each session or all four for $65.
